Voolo puts the other travellers on the map. See who is nearby, join a trip somebody is already planning, and split what it costs.
What the symbols mean
Three things on the map, and three things the app does. There is not a fourth.
A traveller
Someone solo, nearby, shown to the nearest area rather than the spot they are standing on. The time beside them is when they were last on, not a guess at where they are now.
A trip
A plan with days in it, open for other people to join. Anyone in the trip can move a stop or add one, so the plan stays in one place instead of scattering across six chat threads.
The split
Who paid for what, and what that leaves everyone owing. Voolo does the arithmetic and then gets out of the way: you settle in whatever payment app you already use.
The part everyone asks about first
Meeting people you do not know is the whole point and the whole worry. These are not settings buried three screens down; they are how the app works by default.
What to do before you meet somebody- Coarse location, always
- The app asks your phone for reduced accuracy, so it cannot show where you are standing even if somebody asked it to.
- Adults only
- Everyone on Voolo is 18 or over, and we remove accounts that turn out not to be.
- You choose who sees you
- Narrow it down, or come off the map entirely, in one tap.
- Blocking is silent
- Someone you block disappears from your map and is never told.
- The right emergency number
- The safety screen dials the number for the country you are in, not the one you flew from.
Voolo is not
a dating app
Voolo is for finding people to travel with. Using it otherwise gets an account reported and removed.
a payment app
We work out the split. Your own bank moves the money, and Voolo never holds it.
a tracker
No live location, no history of where you have been, and nothing about it for sale.
It is not out yet
We are opening Voolo region by region, so that the map has somebody on it when you arrive. Leave your address and we will write once, when it reaches you.
Before you ask
What does it cost?
Finding people, messaging and every safety feature are free and will stay that way. Paid extras will come later for people who travel constantly, priced for the country they are in.
Which countries does it work in?
Voolo is built country-neutral from the first line: currency, emergency number, dialling code and the payment hand-off all follow wherever you are. We still open it one region at a time, so the map has people on it when you arrive.
Can people see exactly where I am?
No. The app requests coarse location, roughly neighbourhood level, and that is the most it can ever show. There is no live tracking and no way to ask for someone’s precise position.
Do I have to sign in to look around?
No. The app opens straight onto the map. Signing in happens when you want to do something social, and the reason is written on the screen that asks.
When is Android coming?
After iPhone. One app that is genuinely good beats two that are half finished.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, under Settings. It takes your profile, your messages and your place on the map with it, and you do not have to email anybody.
